Stress Management Stress is possibly the greatest cause of ill health in today’s frantic society effecting people from all walks of life. The growing psychological demands we face press us to surpass all expectations and push us not only to the very edge of our limitations but, very often, beyond. In fact it is often said and felt that if you are not stressed you are not working hard enough. Yet stress is known to aggravate all medical conditions and cause many more. Depression, only one type of stress reaction, is predicted to be the leading occupational disease of the 21st century and responsible for more work days lost than any other single factor.
To name but a few. What it boils down to is that we were not designed to live everyday in "fight or flight". This biological response was critical to our ancestors who lived with the continual threat of attack by creatures faster and larger than they. An attack would trigger this physiological reaction in our ancestors to help them defended themselves or escaped to safety. Once the danger had passed, they would have time to recover; their body calming down over a period of two to three hours whilst it’s chemical balance was restored. Two to three hours without interruption by phone calls, children, exams, deadlines, or other emergencies. Today few of us live with the threat of constant physical danger, yet our subconscious will still react to any "perceived" threat in the same way and any tension triggers this response. In our modern society this happens to the average person between 50 to 100 times a days. 50 to 100 times a day our body instinctively reacts as if our life was threatened and takes the appropriate chemical action in order to survive. Which means that for many of us we are rarely free of this response existing in one stage or another through out our entire day. Knowing that it is easier to understand why our body rebels and forces us to slow down and rest while it takes a chance to recover. Most of us have been made aware of the ideal way to balance our life, work and responsibilities, unfortunately this is not an ideal world and despite our very best efforts, things can simply pile up and get on top of us.
